Here’s a short story
about ADAS features.

Adaptive Cruise Control is one of the best features in new cars: you can roll down the highway knowing your car will adjust its speed to the cars driving in front of it. The car’s sensors detect any changes before you do, and adjust accordingly.

Your foot doesn’t always have to be on the gas pedal. You’re confident you can get to your next destination safely, and your brain can turn off for a little bit.

But what happens when those sensors are off, even by a little bit? Your car is now detecting a car in the next lane over, instead of the one you’re in.

The brakes slam for no reason, your seatbelt jerks, your coffee spills… bye-bye, rush-hour daydreaming.

This is the best possible outcome of driving with a misaligned radar: just an unexpected automatic brake-check. There are countless stories of drivers getting rear-ended, or rear-ending others, because they trusted that their car’s sensors would pick up any possible disasters before they did.

California Tightens Up on ADAS and Glass Safety

A windshield replacement is no longer “just glass work.”

California lawmakers are advancing a bill that would require automotive glass companies to identify ADAS-equipped vehicles, disclose OEM calibration requirements, document whether calibration succeeded or failed, and refer customers to a qualified provider when it cannot be completed.

Why should body shops everywhere pay attention? Because the industry is moving toward greater legal accountability for ADAS procedures. If your shop replaces a windshield—or completes any repair that triggers an OEM-required calibration—and ignores that requirement, the liability may land on your business if the safety system later fails.

No warning light does not mean the vehicle is safe. Protect your customers and your shop:

  • Research OEM procedures on every repair
  • Include required calibrations in the repair plan
  • Document calibration results and failed attempts
  • Confirm subcontractors provide complete records
  • Never let insurer pushback override an OEM safety requirement

Windshield repair doesn’t always end with just a glass replacement.

Waymo didn’t just drive itself — it busted 2 teenagers breaking the rules

Most people think of autonomous vehicles as machines designed to do one thing: drive.

But a recent incident in California showed that self-driving technology may be capable of much more than navigating roads.

A Waymo autonomous vehicle became an unexpected witness after detecting two 15-year-olds inside the vehicle drinking alcohol and shooting orange water beads (Orbeez) from the moving car. The vehicle stopped safely in a parking lot, and Waymo's safety systems alerted authorities. Officers from the San Mateo Police Department responded and detained the teens without incident.

In other words: the self-driving car caught them.

The incident highlights an often-overlooked part of autonomous vehicle technology—the vehicle isn't just relying on cameras and sensors to understand the road. It is also equipped with monitoring systems, connectivity, and safety protocols designed to protect passengers and support emergency response when something unusual happens inside the vehicle.

While most conversations around autonomous driving focus on crash avoidance, lane keeping, and navigation, this event demonstrates another side of the technology: situational awareness.

A modern autonomous vehicle isn't just “seeing” traffic lights, pedestrians, and other cars. It is constantly collecting information about its environment, processing potential risks, and communicating when intervention may be needed.

For the automotive industry, this raises an interesting question: as vehicles become more intelligent, how much responsibility will we expect them to take?

The EV “Charging Station of the Future” might be the road itself

The EV “Charging Station of the Future” might be the road itself

For most EV owners, charging still means pulling into a station, plugging in, and waiting. But what if your vehicle could charge while driving down the highway?

A technology known as Dynamic Wireless Power Transfer (DWPT), or “in-motion charging,” allows electric vehicles to receive power from coils embedded beneath the roadway. Similar to the wireless charging pad on a smartphone, these systems use magnetic fields to transfer energy from the road to a receiver mounted underneath the vehicle.

The concept sounds futuristic, but it's already being tested in the real world.

Earlier this year, researchers at Purdue University successfully demonstrated a heavy-duty electric truck receiving 190 kW of power while traveling at 65 mph on a public highway test segment in Indiana. The project marked the first time a roadway in the United States wirelessly charged a commercial vehicle at highway speeds.

The implications of this feat are huge.

One of the biggest challenges facing EV adoption is range anxiety—the fear of running out of battery before reaching a charger. Dynamic charging addresses that concern by turning portions of the roadway itself into charging infrastructure. Instead of carrying massive battery packs designed for hundreds of miles of range, future EVs could potentially operate with smaller, lighter batteries that recharge during normal driving.

Of course, there are still challenges to overcome.

Installing charging infrastructure beneath existing roads is expensive, and utilities will need to manage the substantial electrical demand created by vehicles charging while driving. Researchers are also studying how electrified roadways interact with the power grid and how traffic volume affects energy consumption.

Even so, the technology represents a fundamental shift in how we think about vehicle charging. Instead of bringing cars to the charger, engineers are exploring ways to bring the charger to the car.

For collision repair professionals, it's another reminder that vehicle technology continues to evolve beyond the vehicle itself. Tomorrow's EVs may rely not only on cameras, radar, and sensors, but also on intelligent infrastructure embedded directly into the roads they travel.

The next revolution in transportation may not be sitting under the hood. It may be hiding beneath the pavement.

Hyundai recalls 421,000 vehicles due to brake issue

Hyundai recalls 421,000 vehicles due to ADAS-related braking issue

A recently announced Hyundai recall affects more than 420,000 vehicles equipped with Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA). According to Hyundai, a software malfunction may trigger unintended emergency braking—often referred to as “ghost braking”—when no obstacle is present.

Affected models include:

  • 2025–2026 Santa Cruz
  • 2025–2026 Tucson
  • 2025–2026 Tucson Hybrid
  • 2025–2026 Tucson Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV)

Hyundai is expected to begin notifying affected owners by mail around mid-July.

As these vehicles begin arriving in repair facilities with brake-related complaints, it's important to recognize that this may not be a traditional mechanical brake issue. The concern involves the vehicle's ADAS system and its ability to detect and respond to perceived hazards.

If one of these vehicles enters your shop, you should be documenting:

  • The condition of the forward-facing camera and front radar components
  • Any prior collision or windshield replacement history
  • Previous calibration records, if available
  • Customer-reported braking concerns before any recall repairs are performed

While Hyundai's final repair procedure has not yet been fully released, ADAS component replacement, software updates, or recalibration may be required as part of the remedy. Any repair affecting the forward-facing camera or front radar system should be followed by the OEM-required calibration procedures and proper documentation.

When a vehicle's emergency braking system is involved, calibration is not simply a repair recommendation—it's a critical step in restoring the system to OEM specifications and reducing liability exposure for everyone involved in the repair process. Proper documentation of both the repair and calibration process is equally important.

First Responder Training Event Hosted by Lightning Auto Service

Lightning Auto Service proudly hosted its First Responder Extrication Training Event, bringing together fire departments from across South Jersey, including Gloucester Township Fire Districts 1, 2, and 6, the Voorhees Fire Department, and the East Greenwich Fire Department. The event was held in collaboration with CoPart, Farmers Insurance, and HURST Jaws of Life, uniting first responders, collision professionals, and industry partners for a full day of hands-on learning focused on modern vehicle construction and advanced extrication techniques.

As vehicles continue to evolve with new materials, advanced safety systems, and electrification, both rescue and repair industries must adapt. This training provided participants with a rare opportunity to work directly with late-model vehicles featuring Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), high-strength steels, and reinforced aluminum structures.

Four vehicles—each deemed a total loss and donated by CoPart and Farmers Insurance—were used for live extrication demonstrations. Under expert guidance, attendees practiced navigating complex airbag networks, sensors, and structural reinforcements to perform real-world rescue operations safely and efficiently.

“Today’s vehicles are engineered for safety, but that also means they’re more complex to cut and access during emergencies,” said John Voulgarakis, Co-Founder and CEO of Lightning Auto Service, and a First Responder with over 10 years of field experience. “This type of hands-on collaboration helps bridge the gap between the collision repair industry and emergency services, ensuring both work in harmony to save lives safely and effectively.”

HURST Jaws of Life showcased their latest hydraulic rescue tools through live demonstrations, allowing participants to experience how cutting-edge extrication equipment performs under real-world conditions. Farmers Insurance representatives were also on-site to emphasize the importance of industry partnerships in improving safety and post-collision response outcomes.

To close out the day, Mission BBQ generously provided lunch for all participants, fostering community connection and conversation among departments, technicians, and industry professionals.
